Holistic Faith Model: An Integrated Faith Model...
On this page you will see a model for discipleship and spiritual growth that Pastor Trevor has been formulating and working with for approximately 8 years. This is a personal, as well as, a corporate model for discipleship that is designed to work in line with the Great Commandment found in Mark 12:28-31. Recently in a message on January 9, 2011 Pastor Trevor revealed this model for the congregation as an approach to making plans for our growth together corporately and individually. As promised Pastor Trevor mentioned in that message that he would post this so that there would be a reference point for further discussion and for people to come back to as they make some plans with the Holy Spirit to draw closer to Jesus!
NOTE: This is material that Pastor Trevor is using to pursue a Doctoral
program in the near future. All rights are reserved and IF you would
like to use this for personal or corporate discipleship in your
community of faith please contact him at [email protected]
When Jesus when questioned by a teacher of the religious law of His time concerning the most important commandment of all in the entire scriptures responded:
"The most important commandment is this: 'Listen O Israel! The LORD our God is the one and only LORD. And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.' The second is equally important: 'Love your neighbour as yourself.' No other commandment is greater than these."~Mark 12:29-31 NLT
This response given by Jesus gives us a perspective, an overview for discipleship that incorporates more than just one side of the coin when it comes to growing in our understanding of God, His love for us, His plans and purposes, and our role within His Kingdom individually, and also corporately.
Pastor Trevor has taken Jesus' words and endeavoured to build a model for discipleship and spiritual growth that incorporates all four areas that Jesus commands that we are to use in our relationship with Him. Jesus commands his listeners and us today to love our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Each of these critical areas are vital to our relationship with the ONE who desires to lead, guide, and direct our lives. Using the four terms as the guides for our growth the above model was designed. As you can see each one is connected to each other and neither one is given more importance over the other. This is vitally important as all four areas must assume equal weight in the discipleship plan for spiritual growth otherwise we will find ourselves unbalanced in the journey of life and faith.
As we seek to keep these four areas at the forefront of our journey with Jesus our lives are more balanced and HOLISTIC by nature. Please note that this is NOT some new-age mentality to spiritual growth. By HOLISTIC we understand that we are balanced in all four areas that Jesus calls us to consider as we approach our relationship with Him and those around us. In the past many discipleship programs or models have focused on one or more of these four components that are vital to our faith journey. The problem with only focusing on one over another, or one or two and not the whole, is that we can find ourselves in a very dangerous and difficult place spiritually. Jesus never said "Love the LORD your God with all your mind, and along the way maybe think about using your strength in serving Him!" He purposefully chose to use the Old Testament language from Deuteronomy 6:5 and add to that a fourth very important element and that is our mind, our intellect.
In this model for discipleship that Pastor Trevor is proposing and has been using personally the challenge is to make sure that we are making plans for growth by considering all four areas that Jesus calls us to pursue with equal billing so to speak. As we focus in on each component and pursue our plans in line with the Holy Spirit's leading we place ourselves in the perfect place to grow in our understanding of God's love for us, and His plans and purposes for us both individually, and also corporately, which is essential to a healthy functioning community of faith!
