Discovery Church in Pitt Meadows (original name of our church) was born out of a vision to see a church started in Pitt Meadows for those who did not go to church, or have a church home in the area. It was started in 1997 by a small group of committed people, gathering together to start this new church. The Mennonite Brethren Churches of British Columbia, represented by their Board of Church Extension, sponsored the launch of this church. With much prayer and hard work, Discovery Church was started in the fall of 1997, meeting at Pitt Meadows Secondary School. At that point Discovery Church was the only evangelical church in the Pitt Meadows area.
Since these humble beginnings, many people have found Discovery Church to be a place where they were able to come, learn and grow in their spiritual walk. It has been a place where people from all backgrounds and walks of life have been able to get to a place in life where they now claim Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Saviour. In 2002, our original pastoral couple, Dan & Berni Warkentin, felt called by God to serve another Mennonite Brethren church in Kamloops, B.C.
As a result of this, our church invited Trevor & Barb Stearns to come serve as the new pastoral couple. Trevor & Barb accepted the invitation in August of 2003, after a thorough process of discernment and prayer. Since then Discovery Church has continued to be a place where people have come to find out more about faith and life!
On November of 2006 the Leadership Team decided to make a move to Maple Ridge in an effort to offer a new alternative for people who had a tough time attending church on Sunday mornings.
In September of 2008 the family of faith at Discovery Church of Ridge Meadows began a journey of Experiencing God's Will by studying together through the "Experiencing God" Study by Henry Blackaby and Claude King. This has been a real time of learning, growing, and discovery as individuals and as a community. Currently we are working through a follow-up study on what it means to become the kind of church that God uses to impact our neighbourhoods, our communities, and our nation for His purposes.
As a church family we have seen God move in our midst in mighty ways and we are eagerly looking forward with much anticipation to what God will do in and through us as we continue to seek to fulfill His plans and purposes for the world around us!
On August 11 of 2013 we began a new chapter in our church history as we moved back to Sunday morning services. We are excited to be meeting at 10 am on Sunday mornings in order to reach out to many of the young families of our community who may have found Sunday evenings difficult for their families.
